Features of the 2018 Festival

Festival attendees will experience an intense rehearsal, lesson, class, and concert schedule. Through private lessons and chamber ensembles, attendees will learn from with full-time performers and teachers, in a world class facility. All participants will have the opportunity to perform as a soloist, chamber musician, and member of the marimba orchestra. 

High school and college/professionals (no age limit) will have the opportunity to learn in two tracks: performance-based track and performance/composition-based track. For those music educators and those who just want to perform in the marimba orchestra, shorter two day tracks (Music Educator Sessions and Marimba Orchestra Participant) are available (July 13 & 14 only).


  • July 11 – Travel to Blacksburg and festival meeting with all artists and participants that evening.
  • July 12-14 – Morning time will be reserved for practice time, lessons (2 per full participant), and master classes. Afternoon time will be reserved for rehearsals (2 percussion orchestra pieces and 2 marimba orchestra pieces. Evening time will have performances.
  • July 15 – Travel home.
  • Parts for ensemble pieces will be sent out in mid-June. A detailed schedule will be sent out in early July.

Application and Payment

Registration & FEE DEADLINES:

Tuition includes all fees, housing, and meals. Travel expenses are the responsibility of the participant.

  • July 1 – registration for College/professional, and High School Participants

    • Tuition deposit due – 50% of tuition
      • $475 for college/young-pros
      • $400 for high school
    • Registration form
    • Video/Audio Link (YouTube, Vimeo, SoundCloud, Dropbox, etc.) – Encouraged, but not required
  • July 1 – Registration for music educator sessions and/or marimba orchestra participation

    • Full participation fee
      • Accommodations can be made if participant can only attend July 14.
      • Housing and travel are the responsibility of the participant.
      • A campus meal plan, to dine with other HMF students and faculty, can be purchased separately.
        • Estimated at @$50 for 2 lunches and 2 dinners (July 13 and 14) - payment due to HM on July 13
      • $40 for participation in marimba orchestra (Accept'd registration fee only)
      • $100 for music educator sessions only (with Accept'd registration fee)
      • $120 for participation in both (with Accept'd registration fee)

Travel Information

If you are flying to HMF the Roanoke/Blacksburg Airport (ROA) is the closest to Virginia Tech. Airport shuttle time will be sent out with participant information and part assignments.

Those driving will be sent parking information in the coming months.
